Where does the Stupa come from...?
At the dawn of the Indo-European
expansion, some 10,000 years ago revered kings and noblemen were, after death,
consecrated in dome like structures, hills, mounds or topes. During the time of
the Buddha about 2550 years ago, Sanskrit "stupa" had become holy places in
forests and mountains for worship of ancestors or mighty gods. The spread of
Buddhism throughout Asia made the symbol of transcendance even more universal.
The relics of holy men and women, masters of wisdom and compassion, sacred books
and statues were buried in Stupas as places of worship, places of recollection.
Pagodas (Chinese), Dagobas (Sinhala), Cheedi (Thai), Stupas (Sanskrit) were erected all over
Central, Eastern and Southeast Asia...[more]
Miniature Stupas - a dream comes true
Building a stupa or for that
matter visiting one has not always been easy...not even in Asia. Sometimes
people went on long pilgrimages (and still go) to see and circumambulate famous
stupas where they meditate and enjoy peace and serenity. However, miniature
stupas, small replications of real world stupas are a beautiful way of adding
this powerful architectural symbol into reach of everyone. Did you know: In
former times, when Buddha statues were found inadequate to represent the
Buddha's person and teaching stupas were used as symbols on shrine rooms and
temples?...[more]
